Q&A: ‘Pretty Little Liars’ Star Sasha Pieterse Hits the Big Screen at Tribeca
She’s probably best known for playing conniving, mean girl Alison DiLaurentis on “Pretty Little Liars,” but, in reality, 17-year-old Sasha Pieterse is as sweet as pie.
The rising starlet arrived on the big screen at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival in ”G.B.F.” – which is directed by Darren Stein, the man behind cult hit “Jawbreaker” — a heartwarming, yet comical portrayal of high school and the trials and tribulations of coming out as a homosexual teen. Pieterse plays Fawcett, a popular girl determined to make her high school’s first openly gay teen her gay best friend.
Filled with fresh-faced excitement, Pieterse, who admitted she hasn’t done many interviews yet, sat down with Yahoo! Movies to talk about her first big role and hanging out in NYC.
How did you get involved in “G.B.F”?
Our process was really cool because a year before we shot the movie, I read the script. They asked if I wanted to come in and do a table read for investors and I said okay. I read the script and fell in love with it. I was like, ‘Oh my god. This is amazing.’ Michael [J. Willett] and I are the originals from that read, so when we saw each other on set, it was a reunion. We fell in love with everyone.
Was it as fun filming it?
It was amazing. It was such a short shoot. We shot for about a month and we got so close. It is a very unique movie and there really hasn’t been anything done like this before. There are a lot of cool moments in this movie. There are outrageous things and the fashion is so great, but at the same time there is such a cool, heartwarming story that everyone will see. They’ll love both.
Do you have a real life G.B.F.?
I do. I have two that I’ve had for a long time and they’re amazing.
In the movie you went to prom. Who would be your dream prom date?
I feel so boring when people ask me this question, because I honestly don’t have one. When I watch movies or TV, I am like, ‘wow that guy is really cute, I really like him,’ but I don’t really have one person that I would die to go to something with. There are so many hot guys.
Did you go to your prom?
I didn’t. I was home-schooled and I graduated super-early. But I’ve always had older friends so I got to go to all their dances. I got the best of both worlds. I had the choice to go to prom with a friend of mine and I decided not to because I was filming very close to that. But red carpets and the “G.B.F” prom were so much better.
Your role in “G.B.F” and “Pretty Little Liars” are fairly similar…
Fawcett is a little less evil, but they are similar. Allison is a very mean, manipulative – there’s a lot of layers to her and she’s different – and Fawcett is sort of different as well, but their mean girl mentality is very similar. I was really worried because I’d never done comedy before. You have to be really good to accomplish comedy, so I was very intimidated.
Have you ever been to New York?
I have been to New York before. This is my third time.
What’s your favorite place to visit in NYC?
There is a coffee place right here that I love. I found it a while ago and it has organic coffees and pastries. It is French and I love it.
Do you like bagels? What do you put on your bagel?
I do like bagels. I like cream cheese and cranberries. It is really good.
Have you ever been almost hit by a bike messenger in NYC?
I’ve almost been hit by a lot of things in New York City. I am pretty sure I have almost been hit by a bike messenger before. (Laughs).
Have you ever tried street meat?
Ugh, yeah. Not in New York City, but I was super-hungry and I was coming out of the Hollywood Bowl and I got one of those. I was really nervous, but I came out of it okay.
Who is the most famous you’ve seen, besides yourself, in NYC?
Besides myself, please! (Laughs). Let’s see. Well, my manager’s daughter is Blake Lively and I consider her amazing. I think that’s a good example.
Have you ever gotten your heel stuck in a subway grate?
Yes! It scared the crap out of me. I got my heel stuck in a drain as I was crossing the street and cars were coming. It was really scary. A girl in heels in New York is a hard combination.
‘Pretty Little Liars’ Star Sasha Pieterse Shares 5 Juicy Bits on Season 4
After season three of ABC Family’s hit show”Pretty Little Liars” wrapped, fans were left with a bevy of lingering questions. Is Alison alive? Who is red coat? Now that Toby is back, can we trust him?
While Sasha Pieterse (a.k.a. Alison DiLaurentis) remained tight-lipped when we tried to grill her on the devious dealings of the girls from Rosewood, she did let a couple secrets slip throughout our interview with her for her latest flick, “G.B.F.,” which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Check out the spoilers she shared!
1. All will be revealed this season … finally! ”We’ve done four episodes into the fourth season and there are already so many amazing things,” the 17-year-old starlet dished. “I know we’ve said this before, but I am being serious now; you will find out the answer to almost every single question you have this season.”
2. Whatever you do, don’t miss the mid-season finale. ”There is some serious stuff going on,” she shared. “The mid-season finale and the end finale are going to blow your mind, because it is blowing mine.”
3. It’s true! Ali might actually have a twin. ”There has been a question about the twin thing and there are some cool twists and turns in that,” Pieterse revealed. “I don’t know how much I can say, but it is not following the books as much as you think it would. It is totally different.”
4. It sounds like we’ll have to wait to learn the identity of red coat, but that plot is sure to be juicy. “There is a whole mystery behind red coat, but I like where it is going,” she said coyly.
5. The twin theories might explain the creepy pictures that Pieterse posted on her Instagram account. She posted two pics: one showed masks of Ali’s face and another revealed a pair of feet that are missing legs. “There is a lot of creepy stuff going on this season.”
Bonus fact: Pieterse says if she were writing the script for “Pretty Little Liars,” this season, “Ali would be alive. Period.”

Pretty Little Liars Star Sasha Pieterse Dishes on Season 4: “Questions Will Be Answered” – Exclusive
It’s a truth universally acknowledged among allPretty Little Liars fans that when someone says “questions will be answered,” that usually means it takes all season to get (maybe) one answer — but Sasha Pieterse (Ali DiLaurentis) says Season 4 is jam-packed with answers.
“All of the questions fans have will be answered,” Sasha told Wetpaint Entertainment at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of her new comedy G.B.F. She also added, “Usually, they keep us in the dark on where the season is headed — which sucks! — but we’ve been told a lot. And we’re all very excited.”

Wetpaint Entertainment: We’re so excited about G.B.F.! The trailer definitely has a Mean Girls vibe.
Sasha Pieterse: There’s so many inspirations for this movie. There’s so many teen comedies that have made this possible. We’ve taken influences from Mean Girls, and we’ve taken stuff from Jawbreaker, which Darren [Stein] did, and Clueless. But at the same time, we’ve made it our own because there’s such a heartwarming message in this film. And of course you have all the outrageous and fun things that are going on — the shoes, the hair, the clothes!
The slow mo walks down the hallway!
Yes! The slow mo walks! Might I add, a girl will never be able to do a slow mo walk quite like this. We only get to do it in our dreams, so the fact that Xosha [Roquemore], Andrea [Bowen] and I got to do it is amazing. I think that was our favorite part of the shoot. We couldn’t wait until that day. [Laughs] It was just a special experience.
Your character Fawcett is very reminiscent of Ali DiLaurentis. She’s the Queen of Mean…
She is definitely the Queen of Mean! I think what’s so cool about the difference is that, obviously, Fawcett isn’t as evil.
Of course — there’s not as many secrets in her closet.
Exactly! It’s different, but their underlying shell is very similar. It’s nice to see Fawcett’s softer side. You get to see what makes her tick and realize there’s more underneath that false exterior.
We’re going to be seeing more of you in Season 4 of Pretty Little Liars. What can you tell us about that?
Yes you are! I am so excited! We’re only filming our fourth episode right now, and we already gotpicked up for our fifth season. It’s been so much fun because there’s so much juicy stuff going on. I know we always say stuff like this, but you will actually get most of your questions answered this season. It’s crazy. All of the questions fans have will be answered.
In the first four episodes?
Not quite in the first four [Laughs], but this season is amazing. Everything we have in store for you is crazy. Usually, they keep us in the dark on where the season is headed — which sucks! — but we’ve been told a lot. And we’re all very excited. Even though we can’t tell you very much, you guys are going to absolutely adore it.
We recently spoke to Shay [Mitchell], and she told us she’s really excited that you’re back on set more frequently. Do you feel the same way working with the girls?
Of course! I love being on my show. I love playing Alison. It’s such a treat because every scene is different and juicy. As an actress, I get to sink my teeth into her and try to figure her out. It’s not always easy! She’s a very complicated character. But working with the cast has also been amazing. I think that’s what is so great about. We’re all such a cool, close family, and you don’t normally find that — especially on a set with a lot of girls! Let’s face it, women can be catty, especially in this business, but we found such a cool group. We all adore each other.

Pretty Little Liars Star Sasha Pieterse Talks About Her New Country Song
Sasha Pieterse is the budding starlet most famous for portraying the most deceptive dead character on television. As Alison on Pretty Little Liars
, she is responsible for the torment of several high school girls who undoubtedly regret sharing secrets with their blonde coed before she died. Pieterse, who can also be seen in the new teen comedy, G.B.F., talks about her new turn as a country singer and her upcoming music video.
VH1 CELEBRITY: Can you tell us a little about your new single?
Sasha Pieterese: “The song is called ‘This Country Is Bad Ass’ and it was such an exciting journey we had. We wrote it a year ago and we’ve been kind of waiting for the right time [to put it out]. It just felt right and I guess it was. We weren’t expecting this much hype at all.
“We didn’t expect it to even get on any chart. We kind of just wanted to release it and feel it out.”
Is there any reason you chose to do country music?
“I’m from South Africa and country isn’t popular there at all. When I came to the U.S. we just kind of got into it.
“I’ve been singing for a really long time and I love a lot of genres but country just seemed like the best fit. The people in that genre are just so nice and welcoming. And that seemed so appealing. Also my voice fit it and seemed like the way to go.
“Being in L.A. it was really hard to find a country writer and producer. I eventually – years of searching – found this guy, Dan Franklin. He’s an incredible musician and producer. We write so well together… It’s been a really cool experience. You will definitely be hearing more very soon.”
She also talked about her new song.
“In about three weeks or so I’m going to be releasing a new single called ‘RPM.’ I’ve been so busy but it’s been so great. I am going to be shooting a music video for that as well.
“‘RPM’ is basically about my pace in life and I think a lot of people can relate to that. Our video is going to involve a really nice car with some fast driving. It’s going to be really cool. I’m excited for people to see it!”
Andrea Bowen, Sasha Pieterse, and Xosha Roquemore Play Marry, Boff, Kill
The leading ladies of G.B.F., aka Gay Best Friend, talk to VH1 Celebrity about teen comedies, recreatingJawbreaker‘s famous slow mo walk and which male teen star they would marry.
The film, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, tells the story of Tanner (Michael J. Willett, United States Of Tara) who catches the school’s attention when he is accidentally outed. Soon the three most popular girls in school (Sasha Pieterse, Pretty Little Liars; Xosha Roquemore, Precious; and Andrea Bowen, Desperate Housewives) fight to land Tanner as their G.B.F.
VH1 Celebrity: What’s your favorite teen movie?
Andrea Bowen:Clueless. Xosha Roquemore:Clueless. I love them all. It’s one of my favorite genres of movie but Clueless is at the top. Sasha Pieterse: I love Mean Girls and I love Clueless. It’s kind of a tie for me. XR:Jawbreaker!
Speaking of Jawbreaker, the three of you recreate the famous slowmo walk from the movie. Did you study that scene prior to filming?
SP: I watched clips of it. AB: I wouldn’t say I studied. I think I wanted to bring my own-ness to it. I just don’t think people ever really get to do that. The chances of you getting to slow mo walk with a wind machine with music playing. As a girl, it just doesn’t happen except in your dreams. I think it was each of our favorite day.” XR: We were looking forward to it. We were like, ‘Slow mo walks!’ AB: I think it was our last day or second to last day. XR: We were like, ‘Just get here! We just want to slow mo!’ SP: I love they way they shot it. We got to see a replay after every take.
If you had to choose your own slow mo walk song, what would it be?
AB: Maybe “Brick House.” XR: Maybe… [starts singing "Take Me Out" by Franz Ferdinand] XR: Anything Beyonce. AB: The first reading that we did at Outfest we did our slow mo walk to ‘”Run The World.”
Do you have a gay best friend of your own?
AB: I’ve just always had one. SP: I’ve always had one, too. XR: My best friend before he was out but I knew he was gay. He’s always been my best friend and then through him I met a lot of other GBFs.

Tribeca Film Festival: Sasha Pieterse on ‘G.B.F.’ and ‘Pretty Little Liars’
No matter how sophisticated your fashion sense is, you probably can’t resist a good teen movie—especially if it has satiric undertones à laHeathers, Mean Girls, and Easy A. Enter G.B.F., which takes the familiar pariah-to-popular narrative and adds a satisfying twist: This time, the underage Cinderella is a shy boy who’s just been outed. (“G.B.F.” is, after all, an acronym for “Gay Best Friend.”)
Helmed by Jawbreaker director Darren Stein, the film stars Michael J. Willett and Paul Iancono as the G.B.F.s in question. It also features ’90s screen queens Natasha Lyonne and Rebecca Gayheart, and some emerging comic stars: Desperate Housewives alum Andrea Bowen,Harry Potter scene stealer Evanna Lynch, and Awkward‘s deadpan genius Molly Tarlov.
ELLE: How did you get involved with G.B.F.?The movie’s female lead is played by Sasha Pieterse, who is best known as Pretty Little Liars’ mysterious heroine. In G.B.F., the South African native plays Fawcett, the underage and overdressed princess who never met a trend she didn’t try. ELLE.com spoke with Pieterse just before the movie’s premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Sasha Pieterse: I was asked to do a reading of GBF and I loved the script. I thought it was one of the most amazing things I’d read, but it took a year to get a green light for production. I thought maybe it wasn’t happening, or maybe they went with another actress, and then Darren [Stein] called me and said, “Come be Fawcett.”
ELLE: Fawcett’s hair is almost its own character. How did your hair get that perfect ’70s bounce every day on the set?
SP: It was a process, and it took hours. Basically, they blow-dried my hair out into curls. Then they curled it again and set it with big pins for like an hour and a half. They put in hairspray, brushed it out, and re-curled it again.
ELLE: What hair secrets did you pick up while filming?
SP: I’ve always loved Moroccanoil, and they used a ton of it for shine, and then lots of Bumble & bumble sprays. We kind of made our own recipe and mixed it all together.
ELLE: You also get some neat designer clothes in the film, like those Chanel gloves.
SP: I’m so glad you noticed those! During costume fittings, I grabbed them and I said, “Ihave to wear these!” I was so obsessed with them. At the premiere, I’m wearing Carolina Herrera on the red carpet. I’m so excited, and my stylist Jeff Kim is amazing…it’s the perfect dress.
ELLE: Were you nervous for your scenes with Natasha Lyonne?
SP:I was a little scared; I’m not gonna lie. But oh my gosh, we had the best scene together. She’s got such a presence, and when the camera started filming her, I could watch her for days. She did a monologue about her cat that was entirely improv. None of us could keep a straight face.
ELLE:Pretty Little Liars is one of the biggest shows on TV, and its murder-mystery plot is often compared to Twin Peaks. Do people stop you in public and ask for hints about your killer?
SP: All the time. I got stopped in front of the bras in Victoria’s Secret; I get interrogated in airport bathrooms. I went to South Africa in January to see my family, and even therepeople would stop me and ask, “Sasha, who’s A?” Even my grandma.
ELLE: Your grandma watches Pretty Little Liars?
SP: My grandma invites people over to her house for it. She loves it.
ELLE: But you’re in a coffin for the opening credits…and your character is so racy!
